ABOUT Kisumu
The home, situated on Nehru Road in the Milimani area of Kisumu, was opened in 2000 and was the first of the New Life Home Trust satellite homes. It was formed to rescue abandoned babies, HIV positive as well as those signed over for adoption by their biological families. The traditions and customs of some of the Western Kenya communities place these babies at risk with no opportunities to survive. A large number of abandoned babies ended up dying unattended while the sick could hardly make it to hospital. It is in response to this that the home was opened.
The babies are cared for at the home before being connected to families for foster care and adoption. Some of them are, however, transferred to the main home in Nairobi, which has a medical clinic, for further medical care. For the children who are not adopted, on-going care is given through “Family Homes.” These are units for up to 10 children under the care of an individual housemother.
